Soil is a medium in which plants
grow and a habitat for animals and other micro-organisms. Fertile soil is
vital for the production of food, timber and fiber, which are all essential
for human existence and providing economic prosperity.
Soil also influences the character of
our local landscapes and preserves archaeological remains.
It plays a key role in environmental
regulation such as pollution prevention, by breaking down or reducing the
impact of chemical contaminants, and for carbon storage and release that can
influence climate change through modifying the level of greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere. Soils are important in nutrient cycling and regulating water flow and flood risk reduction.

USES OF COAL
|
Coal has many important uses worldwide. The most significant
uses of coal are in electricity generation, steel production, cement
manufacturing and as a liquid fuel. Around 6.6 billion tons of hard coal were
used worldwide last year and 1 billion tons of brown coal. Different types of
coal have different uses. Steam coal - also known as thermal coal - is mainly
used in power generation. Coking coal - also known as metallurgical coal - is
mainly used in steel production.
WHERE IS COAL FOUND?
Coal is usually found within the surface of the earth on the
coal beds where the top soil is stripped off the coal. Hence, the coal is dug
out in a process called surface mining. The countries where coal is found
include North America, Russia, China, India, Africa and South America.
